When watching magpies closely as they visit our garden, my attention is drawn to the magic of their varying feather patterns and colouration. It is not just the striking black and white plumage of the adult birds, but also the soft feathery shades of grey with splashes of brown that are part of the rich fluffy coat of the young magpie that I find most attractive.
