Julie Simmons

Julie Simmons trained as a commercial artist (Graphic Artist) working as a tracer, detail draughtsperson for an engineering company, and producer of exploded view drawings for car manuals. She also practiced for 16yrs as a successful studio potter. In 2004 Julie re-established a painting profession, quickly gaining recognition and awards for her accomplished techniques. Although Julie paints in oils, pastels and mixed media, it is the medium of watercolour that excites her the most. She paints en plein air regularly. Painting outdoors is a crucial aspect of her work; developing shape and tone. Consequently, the subject is simplified with the detail being kept to a minimum. Julie’s renewed interest in multi-media and expressive forms of watercolour technique on canvas give the paintings a translucence and complexity. Her paintings, both oil and watercolour, win many awards throughout Australia and her work is highly sought after and in numerous important collections. Julie is a Fellow of the Royal Art Society.
