Gliding Home, Blue Mountains

Size: 45cm x 57cmm x .7cm
Machine and hand embroidery using long-stitch technique
Appliqued onto a digitally transfer-printed background

The outstretched wings of the gliding magpie reveal their unique black and white plumage pattern. Breeding magpies have their own staunchly defended territory. At dusk, the magpie parent will fly out and check the boundaries of the family’s territory. Here, the last light of day hits the escarpment of the Grose River Valley, as the magpie swoops home for the evening. A mixture of machine embroidery on the appliqued bird and hand stitching on the background mountains has been used.
