Russell Smith
The ability to capture the Australian landscape has been a constant subject for Russell Smith. Painting mostly en plein air, Russell has developed a unique and personalised artistic direction. His brushstrokes are thick and painterly creating dynamic expressions of form and depth. The paintings are an attempt to combine topographical information with an awareness of pattern and subtle abstraction within Australian landscapes. Russell Smith trained and worked as an architectural draftsperson where he learned and enjoyed the techniques of rendering and drawing. Taking this passion further he embarked on a pursuit of plein-air oil painting. He says time spent on site painting allows him to become fully immersed in the subject. Russell lives and works in the Hawkesbury district of New South Wales, surrounded by the bush, rolling hills and Blue Mountains.
