Conversation with the Artists & Gallery Tour
Spring is a season of renewal. It marks a turning point in the natural world – a time of new growth, longer days and the return of colour and energy after the quiet of winter. It is also a season that invites us to think about our own beginnings, changes and possibilities.
A Spring Affair: New beginnings brings together a diverse selection of new paintings that, in different ways, reflect this sense of renewal. Some engage directly with the colours and abundance of spring – flowers, gardens, fruit, birds and the natural landscape; while others approach the idea more obliquely, through interiors, still life, memory and the small, familiar moments of everyday life.
I was interested in bringing together paintings that share this underlying sense of freshness and optimism without requiring them to illustrate a particular idea. The result is deliberately eclectic. There are bold and colourful works alongside quieter, more contemplative paintings; highly considered still lifes sit comfortably beside expressive landscapes and more playful contemporary interpretations of the world around us.
There is something particularly appealing about the way artists respond to the changing seasons. Spring provides an almost endless visual vocabulary – fresh foliage, flowering plants, brilliant skies, changing light and the renewed activity of the natural world. Yet for artists, these subjects are rarely simply about appearance. A vase of flowers, a familiar landscape or a collection of objects can carry associations of memory, place, home and experience. Through painting, the ordinary can become something worth stopping to look at.
This is perhaps what I enjoy most about bringing together a group exhibition such as this. Although the artists work in very different ways, unexpected conversations begin to emerge between their paintings. Colour, pattern, light, texture and composition move across the exhibition, creating connections that may not have been apparent when the works were selected individually.
At its heart, A Spring Affair is a celebration of looking – and of looking again. It is about the pleasure of colour, the beauty of the natural world and those small moments that signal that something is beginning anew.
After what has been a particularly challenging few years, the idea of new beginnings feels especially pertinent. Spring reminds us that change is inevitable, but also that renewal is possible. This exhibition is my small celebration of that idea – a collection of paintings chosen for their vitality, beauty and ability to lift the spirits.
I hope you enjoy this new collection as much as I have enjoyed bringing it together.
